From Sprain to Game: Managing Lateral Ankle Sprain and Optimizing Return To Sport

Course Content

Lateral ankle sprains are among the most common sports injuries, yet they are often underestimated. Without a structured approach, they can lead to chronic ankle instability and long-term limitations. This two-day course provides in-depth insight into the full rehabilitation process—from injury to return to sport.

Participants will explore the anatomy and biomechanics of the ankle joint, with a specific focus on the structures involved in lateral ankle sprains. The course addresses various injury mechanisms and highlights the importance of an accurate diagnosis for effective treatment.

A key component of the course is the ROAST model (Rehabilitation Oriented ASsesmenT)—a structured framework for identifying limitations following an ankle sprain. Participants will learn how to apply this model to develop targeted rehabilitation strategies.

The course also covers the Return to Sport continuum, teaching participants how to make responsible return-to-play decisions based on clinical evaluations and recovery metrics.

The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, including anatomical palpation, on-field clinical assessment, and rehabilitation techniques. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to guide athletes from the acute phase of injury to a safe and optimal return to sport.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the ankle joint, with specific attention to the structures involved in lateral ankle sprains.

  • Explain the injury mechanism of a lateral ankle sprain and articulate the importance of understanding this mechanism for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

  • Define what an ankle sprain is and explain how it can progress to Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI).

  • Understand that CAI is a multifactorial condition and identify various contributing factors.

  • Describe and apply the ROAST model (Rehabilitation Oriented ASsesmenT) as a systematic framework to assess impairments following an ankle sprain.

  • Select appropriate treatment options based on the impairments identified within the ROAST model.

  • Identify and apply the stages of the Return to Sport continuum for lateral ankle sprains, including on-field management and clinical considerations.

  • Make responsible Return to Play decisions based on clinical evaluations and recovery metrics.

The language of instruction for this course is English.

He specializes in the prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries, with a particular focus on lower limb conditions such as chronic ankle instability and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. His expertise includes the use of advanced techniques such as 3D kinematic analysis and proprioceptive evaluations to identify motor risk behaviors in athletes.

François Fourchet

François Fourchet is a sports physiotherapist, osteopath, and researcher with extensive experience in sports medicine. He was Head of the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Department at Hôpital de La Tour from 2019-2025.
In addition to his clinical work, François lectures at institutions including the Université de Savoie Mont-Blanc and delivers national and international training sessions for healthcare professionals. He is a co-author of rehabilitation literature and an active member of the International Ankle Consortium.
